This past Tuesday I attended a high school band concert at my alma mater. One of the pieces played by the concert band really caught my ear, Apollo: Myth and Legend by Rob Romeyn, published in 2008. At first listen during the warm-up, I thought it was a piece from Pirates of the Caribbean. It kept nagging me after I went home, and I finally did some research. It turns out I was right.

Apollo: Myth and Legend composed by Rob Romeyn
He's a Pirate composed by Klaus Badelt
Side by side comparison (2 MB mp3, 1:21, 224kbps VBR, 44hz)

It goes from Apollo to Pirate with a brief silence between; the latter is extremely overcompressed, like most modern music, so it will seem louder. Apollo, to its credit, has more variation, creativity with the percussion, and less repetition in the rhythm sections. I think both pieces generate excitement, however "influenced" Romeyn was by the swashbuckery that was PotC.

Went to a high school football game Friday night with Drew, Joe and my brother. Wore my letterman's jacket and everything. It was blistering fucking cold. I recognised no one except for teachers and old neighbours. The football team still sucked as usual. No surprises there. I spent a lot of time hanging out with my old band directors, who heart me for not dying seniour year. Somehow I think I've let myself get suckered in to joining the symphonic band at my college. That'll actually work out nice though, since I'm taking music appreciation next semester and holy shit, that reminds me I need to register those classes.

[later]

Okay. I do that on the 7th. Good. I need to find that list of classes my advisor gave me anyway.

Ugh. Psych test tomorrow morning. I should probably study.
